We moved into our first home on January 14, 1999, within a week we began discussing adopting a dog.
While searching for a breed that fit our lifestyle, we visited the Humane League of Lancaster County hoping to adopt a dog in need. As we traveled the hallways of their kennel, one little girl caught our eyes. Originally miss-labeled as a Keeshond we were trying to figure out if they came in “white” because she was white. She was actually the 2nd dog in the very first kennel we saw when we arrived. She pressed her side against her run and begged for attention, unlike the others that barked or growled wanting attention. We checked her tag and she wasn't available for adoption yet. We called for the next week, everyday, hoping that her previous neglectful owners would relinquish their rights. February 14th 1999 (incidentally Valentine's day) we called to find that she was available, so we both rushed off and traveled to our neighboring county to pick up our new house pet. At Nine months we had an unruly, un-trained female Samoyed with a serious case of separation anxiety named Kelsa. Thus began our first exposure to the Samoyed breed.
Though she was coming along well, both of us felt bad about her anxiety. Crate her and you would come home to her crate being banged up and bloodied. Don't crate her and your house was destroyed. We read more on separation issues and we decided then to get another Samoyed since we enjoyed having Kelsa around. In turn we contacted Delaware Valley Samoyed Rescue and Mid-Atlantic Samoyed Rescue looking for another Sammy to adopt. October 28th 1999 (our anniversary, incidentally) we were off again picking up our then 5 year old male Sammy named Lexus. With Kelsa tagging along, we took a trip down the turnpike to go meet this boy. Incidentally he came home with us that day... despite them both having their own issues they helped comfort one another and became buddies and we were hooked on the breed.
Over the next few months we tried to learn about our newly acquired male. Using the AKC papers that accompanied him into our home, we found his breeder and decided there would be no harm in contacting them to let them know that we had him and he was in a loving home. Correspondence grew over time- everything from much needed advice to general chit chat.
Despite having the two of them and feeling the need to support rescue, our house seemed incomplete without a puppy. We inquired about a breeding from
Lexus's breeder. Come May 16th of 2002 we were bringing home our 10 week old male show dog-
WhyteWynd's Streak O' Whitefire (aka Micah). Unknowingly igniting a flame for Sammie's in our hearts.
We started taking Micah to obedience classes where he won over the hearts of everyone in the class with his charm. Soon we were hoping he would do the same in the show ring...
October 15th 2002 we started showing him with the help of Lexus and Micah's breeder. At first having them show Micah, then after much mentoring and tutoring- began to show him ourselves. He finished with 3 majors in August 2006. All points proudly owner-handled. We plan to let him relax and will bring him out occasionally in vets classes. Fortunately he does not qualify for that yet.
In the midst of all the shows and changes, we lost Lexus and added 2 other girls. Sabina, Whytewynd’s Wyndswept Prelude and Sierra, Hawkwind’s Wisteria Jade. Sabina has only been out a few times and although a nice girl with sound structure, she does not enjoy showing AT ALL. We have tried and thought she would grow out of it but she’s much more content to be a couch potato and companion to our 3 adopted boys. Sierra was Best Opposite Intersex puppy in the 6-9 month Futurity class at the 2005 Samoyed nationals under Judge Heidi Neiman held in Owensboro. She is slowly maturing and we are starting to bring her out more as she is easing into the show scene. She prefers to work and we have begun to do working events with her as well.
We are busy people who enjoy our dogs, they live in our house, sleep in our beds, sit at our feet, and play with the children. We wouldn’t have it any other way. We will be listing planned litters as they are decided upon and we do not breed often. The purpose is for health, temperament, genetics and a great companion worthy of being loved by their people. We will update our pages as news occurs. The Chronicles of these dogs and their story continues...
Thus WyndSwept Samoyeds was created... and now transformed into Chronicle Samoyeds.
